No, I love the Clarendon setting. It's actually a shade farther than Pentagon City, but I don't want to sit in a mall all day. And it looks like no rain tomorrow, but clouds.

The Clarendon location is definitely "my store."

    blakespot

Yeah, Clarendon is certainly a more 'scenic' location.

sorry guys, but upon checking www.apple-museum.net (http://www.apple-museum.net/) today, I realized that the site is down...

there is an explanation on the site why (apparently too much traffic...)

it's pretty sad, since I always thought of that site as one of the best about Apple's history and Apple products of yesteryear (together with everymac.com (http://www.everymac.com/) and lowendmac.com (http://www.lowendmac.com/))

So... What should I know about SLI? Is it really worth it? It looks like the items posted above would support two GTX 560s?
    Sorry for all the questions...

we certainly have no wish to hide that we're doing it.

Thanks for clearing this up guys. I work in the affiliate marketing industry myself. I fully support a successful website's use of good technology to drive affiliate sales. It's a major part of how the Internet works.

What is concerning to me is that I wrote a comment, "nice affiliate link" in that thread. And my comment was deleted. not flagged or edited -- deleted.

This is what lead me to believe someone was trying to hide something.

Have you tried Brasso (or any such equivalent)?

It's a fine abrasive metal (but works fine on plastic) polishing compound, that should, with a little time and patience, polish out the scratches, I used it to buff out rather large scratches on the Apple logo on the side of an old Power Mac G3 years ago, and it works a treat, removed all traces of 1-2mm deep, 5cm long scratches and left the logo with an absolutely perfect shine.

Just make sure the plastic is of the coloured and not the painted type though, otherwise you'll just polish off the colour. ;)

Though it's probably powerful enough for a file server, I wouldn't advise using a laptop as a file server. Because parts are not easily replaceable.

TRIM Support Enable 1.1 was released, adding TRIM support for non-Apple SSD's in Snow Leopard. The latest version, 1.1, is working in Lion (I installed it on my 2010 3.33GHz 6-Core Mac Pro and it's great!). They app has a backup and restore feature should anything go wrong. Users reported issues with slower speeds, but fixing permissions, et al before activating seemed to solve the matter.

Create a new NSString with the new one added (either through stringByAppendingString or @"%@ blah blah",oldstring).

This could just be situation of meeting mandetory continuing education at the lowest price. If you are a doctor, you are required to take a certain number of hours of continuing medical education. Same goes for attorneys and many other professions.

I'm not a teacher, but based on my experiences with continuing education, sometimes you take really weird classes to meet the mandated minimum requirements. I would not be surprised if the state paid for this program (especially if it was inexpensive) so its teachers could meet their requirements. That isn't necessarily a determination that the seminar is the state's policy on any particular issue.

    I don't really know, just a hypothesis.

That is what I figure it is. Sounds like the district was getting a pretty good deal at that cost per head. Those things normally cost a lot more.

It is required for teachers to have continuing education and most districts allow the teacher to submit the cost to the district for reimbursement. Teachers are giving a pretty board range of stuff they can do it on. As long as the reimbursement cost are reasonable they generally will cover it. They will not pay travel expensive for it.
My mom has to have so many hour ever few years and she does most of them during the summer and does them locally. District pays for them.
On top of that districts will often times have things brought in and then they will get subs for the teachers for that day. Depends what it is.

I think this is an example of making a mountain out of a mole hill.

What is concerning to me is that I wrote a comment, "nice affiliate link" in that thread. And my comment was deleted. not flagged or edited -- deleted.

We generally don't send messages to people making post reports as it is a time consuming process. The moderator who handled this case recognized the affiliate link as being from MR so knew nothing needed to be edited in the OP's post. I'm not sure what flagging your post would have done, and if we simply edited every post members made that was an incorrect statement, it would needlessly clutter the forums. Also, reporting a post, plus responding to the post you reported generally causes more work for us moderators, so we prefer you simply report the post only.

In short the your post was deleted because it was off-topic, and the moderators generally don't make personal follow-ups on these kinds of edits because of the time it takes. The Contact Us form is there for when members have specific questions about moderation if they really want clarification from us. And we have no issue clarifying our actions when people ask.

However, in many ways, the metric of how many times someone gets a rumour 'right' just isn't that important to a large proportion of forum members, especially many long term members who have their own ideas about who is worth listening to on any given topic or not. Many of them might read the news threads to find out what's going on and what people are thinking, but rarely participate in the scrum.

I think it could be somewhat analogous to member titles based on a user's total number of posts. Most people probably don't care what their title is. Some people will take "newbies" less seriously than others.

In either case, member titles, avatars, and join dates are form of recognition for members of the forum. Points could be used in much the same way. Just like member titles, some people won't care what points a poster has and others will. Perhaps the term "Reputation" isn't the best. Maybe "Rumor Rank" or something (or "Gullibility" :D).

In other words, the intent is to award a specific recognition for members (that want to participate). Just like member titles are known to be based on total posts, this would be known to be based on 'rumor' stories. I didn't really mean a system to rate a user's general contribution to the site. What I meant by "giving weight to user's opinions" was just in context of discussing rumors. For example, given the track record of Kevin Rose and John Gruber - when both weigh in on an rumor, which are you more likely to believe?

Besides, many news articles may not be about rumours but instead might be about actual substantiated news, so it would seem pointless to employ opinions on these as meaning anything useful. Someone voting on whether a OS release is a good or bad idea hardly qualifies them to get a higher ranking than someone who doesn't vote.

Right; news items wouldn't be appropriate to include a vote. By the same token, some rumor items could have multiple votes. Let's take one of the recent stories, for example. iPad 2 with High Resolution Screen and SD Card Slot, iPhone 5 with A5 Processor? (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/01/14/ipad-2-with-high-resolution-screen-and-sd-card-slot-iphone-5-with-a5-processor/) There's essentially three major features up for discussion:

    1) Will the iPad 2 have an SD slot?

    2) Will the iPad 2 screen have a greater resolution than the current iPad?

    3) Will the iPhone 5 be a dual-mode CDMA/GSM model?

Out of the 346 posts, 21% of them either directly said aspects of the rumor were true/false or posted with the assumption that it was true/false (that includes you up there, Apple OC ;)) The percentage of unique members making such a post is higher because many of them posted several times in the thread, obviously not saying what they believed of the rumor every time.

How many of these particular posters are likely to be interested in some kind of poll/vote which can potentially earn them a badge or point for their profile? Of all the other posters that discussed the rumor without saying they believed it or not, how many of them may be interested in voting on the rumor for fun?

It difficult to say how broad interest in something like this is, but I don't think it's insignificant. Currently there are awards based on seniority/posting history: avatars, member titles, forum access, etc. Since a large portion of the website is rumor-centric; having a rumor-centric award system could be a popular addition.

What if there are currently no technical means to retrospectively award 'points' to almost half a million members? Is this where Arn and co should be spending limited time and resources to develop this system or would attention be better spent elsewhere on other forum and site features?

That's certainly is a concern. I'm also aware that forum software is basically a package deal and it could be difficult to add. I have, however, used several forums that use point-based system for members. One gaming forum in particular works in basically the same way as this system would work: members have points that they can use to vote on who they think will win a match. If they are right, they are awarded points; if they are wrong, they lose points.

Also, enabling contributors to clear their slate for $25 per year would make the idea of a reputation system completely redundant, how would you know who to trust?

Hopefully I have explained what system I imagine a little bit better. Contributors being able to clear their points would be more analogous to being able to use the "MacRumors Demi-God" member title.
